Canton Parks and Recreation began work this week on the Monument Pond Restoration Project in efforts to make much-needed structural repairs and improve the overall health of the pond and the surrounding area.
Monument Pond was drained, and fish were relocated across Stadium Park Drive to Nimishillen Creek. Once the pond had drained into smaller pools, charitable fly fishing organization, Nimi on the Fly, assisted in relocating approximately another 100 fish to the creek. The drainage was necessary in order for park crews to begin work on replacing structures that will improve the flow of water in and out of the pond, and improve its overall ecosystem
Other renovations to the surrounding area will include repairs to the stone walls around the pond, shelter restoration, improvements to the raceway, and the removal of about 20 trees.
